Volunteering is one of the best ways to build confidence, develop new skills, and connect with others. For NDIS participants, it can also be a valuable stepping stone toward employment or simply a meaningful way to give back to the community.
Whether you’re interested in working with animals, helping at a local op shop, or joining a community garden, your NDIS plan can support you to get started, safely and with the right level of help.
Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time. It can help you:
For many people, volunteering becomes the first step toward paid employment, while for others it offers community connection and purpose, without the demands of the open workforce.
If volunteering is part of your personal goals, your NDIS plan may be able to fund several supports to help make it possible, including:
Getting to and from your volunteer location might be funded under your Core Supports. If transport is a barrier, you can request specific funding to cover travel to volunteering placements.
You may need a support worker to assist you during your volunteering shift. This could include helping with communication, mobility, or understanding tasks. This support is often funded through Core or Capacity Building supports.
You might need help preparing for your volunteering role. That can include training in time management, personal presentation, following instructions, or managing anxiety. These supports may be delivered by support workers, social workers, or therapy providers.
Support Coordinators or Recovery Coaches can help you identify volunteer options that suit your strengths, interests, and goals. They can also assist in reaching out to organisations and advocating for the right support conditions.
To ensure volunteering is supported in your plan, it must be included as a goal. For example:
During your planning meeting or plan reassessment, talk about why volunteering matters to you and how it will help with your long-term goals, whether that’s community involvement, skill-building, or future employment.
Our team can work with you to:
Volunteering doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be supported the right way. We’re here to make the process smooth, achievable, and meaningful.
