How Social Workers Support Employment Pathways

Finding and keeping a job isn’t always straightforward, especially when you’re managing disability, recovery, or complex support needs. That’s why employment support isn’t just about job searching. For many NDIS participants, appropriate support needs to start earlier, including confidence-building, daily routines, emotional readiness, and long-term planning.

That’s where social workers come in.

Social workers focus on the whole person, not just the job. We work alongside people to help them develop the life skills, mindset, and support networks they need to succeed in employment, at their own pace.

The Role of a Social Worker in Employment

Social workers support participants to:

  • Explore their goals and strengths
  • Work through any barriers that may be impacting progress
  • Build routines and habits that lead to greater independence
  • Connect with appropriate services and programs
  • Build self-confidence, motivation, and emotional well-being

We don’t just look at what job you want; we look at what’s going on in your life that will help (or hinder) your ability to succeed in that job.

Helping You Set Realistic, Personalised Goals

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin, especially if you’re unsure what kind of work you want to do. A social worker can help you:

  • Reflect on your interests and values
  • Identify your strengths and past achievements
  • Break down long-term goals into achievable short-term steps

For example:

  • “I want to explore what kinds of jobs might suit me.”
  • “I’d like to start volunteering one day a week.”
  • “I want to improve my routines so I can eventually work part-time.”

All of these are valid goals — and we help you build the confidence to pursue them.

Addressing Emotional and Practical Barriers

You might be facing challenges that make work feel out of reach right now. These could include:

  • Anxiety or low self-esteem
  • Past trauma or discrimination
  • Lack of transport or daily structure
  • Difficulties with communication or sensory regulation

Social workers create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can work through these issues, develop coping strategies, and feel supported in your recovery.

We can also help you access:

  • Mental health supports
  • Housing advocacy
  • Financial support services
  • Disability Employment Services (DES) or School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES)

Supporting You Through Every Stage of the Journey

Our role doesn’t stop when you find a job. We can also support you with:

  • Transitioning into work or study
  • Navigating Centrelink or DES systems
  • Managing workplace stress or conflict
  • Advocating for workplace adjustments or flexible arrangements
  • Ongoing confidence-building and emotional support

We work collaboratively with your broader support team, including support workers, recovery coaches, coordinators, and employers, to make sure your plan is sustainable and grounded in your lived experience.
